Welcome to the birth of Córdoba
QORTEBA: THE ORIGINS
The city of Córdoba, known by the Phoenicians as QORTEBA, had its origins in an oil mill which existed here over 3,000 years ago. Since then, the olive oil from Córdoba has been considered by many as among the finest in the world.
“We too were born into the world of olive oil and we want to share its riches with the public.” This is now the fourth generation of farmers at Finca Duernas who have managed to position their products among the top extra virgin olive oils on the market.
CORDUBA TAKES THE LEAD
During the Roman Empire, the olive oil from the province of Córdoba – CORDUBA – was exported to Rome and was highly appreciated by the Roman emperors. “In Baetica, there is no better tree than the olive… Baetica reaps the richest harvests from its olive trees” (PLINY THE ELDER, 79 AD).
Legio X Equestris: In the year 50 BC, Rome was ruled by a triumvirate, but when this ended, civil war broke out between Julius Caesar and Pompey and spread to Hispania. Finca Duernas lies on the precise spot where Julius Caesar camped with his legions as he prepared for the battle which was to finally put an end to the lengthy civil war against Pompey’s followers. Soon after, he would declare himself the sole leader of the Roman state.
CORDOBA KEEPS THE FLAG FLYING
Right up to this day, Córdoba has maintained its role as a leading producer of virgin olive oil. Its olive oils are considered among the best in the world, and from Finca Duernas, we export to over 20 countries worldwide.
